Post office changeover
Joe Trickett has sold the Lochranza post office and village shop to Glaswegian Jim Primrose.
Joe and Linda Trickett have leased Knox House in Brodick and intend to open it as Arran Active sports and adventure shop.
Mr Primrose has sold his share in a Midlands transport business to live in Lochranza with his wife Janet and run the village store.
Spinners come second
The Handspinners team of three Arran ladies came second in the ITV programme Busman’s Holiday last Tuesday.
Ann Hollingworth, Margaret Wellington and Shauna Lees said that Arran came over as a very quaint place where people sit and spin in the sunshine.
Corrie ladies run for fun
Six Corrie ladies are making the first fun run of the season on Easter Sunday.
They are doing it as part of the Corrie Church Centenary Appeal Fund to mark the 100th anniversary of the building.
Cow pie for Alf
This week’s rugby star profile is of Richard (Alf) McMaster who was one of the founder members of the Arran club.
He lists his occupation as sheep farmer, favourite food is cow pie and hobby is missing the boat. If he was not a farmer he says he would like to be a travel agent.
Brodick blooms in Boston
Brodick Castle head gardener John Basford has entered rhododendron blooms in the Massachusetts Agricultural Show in Boston, USA.
These flowers are not commonly grown in America and he is hoping that the interest shown in them will see an increase in American tourists coming to National Trust for Scotland properties and gardens.
Strike ballot
The National Union of Railwaymen is organising a ballot among all crew members and pier hands on the Clyde for authority to call a strike if grievances are not settled.
A union meeting last Monday followed by a meeting with CalMac brought the two sides no closer.
Bus to Ayr
A new bus service linking the ferry to Prestwick and Ayr will begin next week.
Operated by old established coach company Quin’s of Ayr, it will meet the 8.20am ferry and return for the 6pm sailing with an adult return fare of £2.50.
Closure meeting
Some 70 people attended a public meeting in Brodick Hall on Wednesday night to protest about the imminent closure of Coopers Store.
A representative from parent company Gateway was at the meeting to attempt to explain the reasons for closure. He hoped it would be sold to a chain specialising in smaller shops. The meeting was chaired by Evelyn Sillars.
Rugby tour
Members of Arran Rugby Club have just returned from their annual tour.
They stayed at the Saxon Cross Motel in Cheshire and played two matches over the weekend against local club Congleton, losing by six points to seven on Saturday and four points to 14 on Sunday.
Awards for the most inebriated men went to Alastair Dobson, Duncan Mulholland, Ian Sillars, Richard (Alf) McMaster and Angus Adamson.
Farming on agenda
Labour agriculture spokesman John Home Robertson is to speak next Saturday at the Kinloch Hotel, Blackwaterfoot.
Accompanying Mr Home Robertson on the platform is MEP Hugh McMahon, PPC Brian Wilson and Archie Gillespie of Islay, a former member of the Land Court.
Kilmory champions
Last Sunday about 70 young people and leaders from around the Island took part in the Youth Club Association Senior Games Day at Lamlash.
Kilmory Youth Club took the honours at volleyball, football and netball and won the Gardner Trophy for best all-round performance.
