A young Arran rugby team came home from Murrayfield with the Jim Telfer Cup last weekend.
Following their success in the Ayrshire sevens games, an Arran High School S1 team was selected to represent Ayrshire in the Schools Festival of Rugby at the Emirate World Sevens at Murrayfield.
The Arran team was accompanied by PE teachers Steve Evans and Julie McGhee. Twelve players were registered for the three Arran sevens games which were played on half size pitches on the Murrayfield back fields last Saturday.
Teams were divided into four pools of four teams. Arran beat Nairn Academy and Clackmannanshire Schools and lost to North Berwick. The Arran boys were adjudged to have won the Jim Telfer Cup for fair play which aims to promote fair play within a competitive and non-competitive environment.
Team coach Steve Evans said: ‘The cup is awarded to the team which accepts victory and defeat in the same manner, respects officials and their decisions and are all-round good sports. It is presented in the name of former player and coach Jim Telfer who had success with the Scotland national team and the British and Irish Lions. I’m proud of the boys for this achievement.’
In between games the boys were able to go into the main stadium to watch the Emirate sevens on a full-size pitch. Among the games they saw were Scotland against Argentina, Australia versus South Africa and England versus New Zealand.
The boys had the pleasure of an overnight stay in the Menzies Hotel in Irvine before returning to Arran with their prized silverware.
