There have been many expressions of sadness by readers at the recent death of Murphy, the black labrador who featured in the Banner each week in the ‘Where is Murphy? section. We print a selection of messages from Banner readers below.
Sir,
It was with great sadness that we heard the news that Murphy had passed away. Our condolences go out to Murphy’s owner and all people at the Banner who were involved in the Where is Murphy? feature.
Our lives were very much the richer for taking part in the weekly feature to find Murphy’s location. We enjoyed finding out were he had been and if our guess was accurate and also the comments of the people from around the world. Murphy was an international celebrity and he will be greatly missed. We had hoped to meet him on our annual holiday to Arran but the memories of his pictures will be with us for ever.

Sir,
I was having my usual Sunday morning look at the Banner web page and was very shocked to read that Murphy has gone to the big kennel in the sky. Part of my Sunday ritual was trying to figure out where he was each week and I am saddened that we will no longer be able to follow that wily dog with the kerchief around our favourite haunts.
Please pass on my condolences to his owner. I will miss him greatly too, as I am sure will many of your readers and extended family of Arran lovers, but I am sure Murphy will be fondly remembered by everyone.
Yours,

Sir,
My wife and I were extremely sad to hear about Murphy.
Our condolences go out to his family. We always followed his antics and were overjoyed to meet him at the Boxing Day dook. My wife was delighted to share his celebrity status when she ended up appearing alongside him in the New Year Banner this year. Each week as soon as we received our Banner in the post we always turned straight to his picture to guess his whereabouts that week.
I am sure many Banner readers will be as sad as we were and I hope that his family can take some comfort in realising the pleasure and smiles he brought to so many each week. We will miss him.
Yours,

Sir,
We were very sad to read of the death of Murphy. We have so enjoyed seeing him at familiar and not so familiar spots every week on your website. Please could you pass our condolences to Murphy’s owners. As dog owners ourselves we know what a horrible experience it is to lose a much loved pet.

Sir,
I was so sorry to hear about Murphy’s passing. My Mum and Dad are on their way to Arran at the moment and Dad asked me to log in today and find out where Murphy was last week (with the canoes) as he’s not going to be online for over a week. I’ve just broken the news to them and they are upset too. It has been a weekly pastime logging in to see what Murphy has been up to and we’ll all miss him. Please pass on our condolences to his owner.
Yours,
