Blue puppy sparks huge interest among Banner readers
Published:  18 April, 2008

The little blue puppy featured in the Banner last week has raised a huge amount of interest.

Farmer Geoff Brookes said he might just call it ‘dog’ and asked for some help in selecting a name for this rare blue collie pup and the offers have come flooding in.

When the Banner called at South Bank Farm on Tuesday morning the cute puppy had just opened his bright blue eyes for the first time and was blinking at a brave new world. As Geoff held the puppy carefully, his collie mum Shona was watching in the background.

So far there have been suggestions from 49 readers for a total of 13 different names. Most popular are Blue and Gorm, which is Gaelic for blue.

Also suggested are Glas, Arran, Sky, Liath, Bonnie, Sapphire and Merrill. Names have come from as far away as Fort William in the north and Devon in the south.

School teacher Isobel Brown said: ‘Obviously the pup is air force blue in colour so he could be air or force. My class in a small Angus primary school were excited about the article and picture of the pup.’

Geoff said: ‘A lady phoned me up from Devon after she had seen her Banner and suggested Glas. She said it was Welsh for blue. I just don’t know what to do but I shall mull it over.

‘I know a lot of children are waiting with bated breath to find out the name, so I won’t keep them in suspense for too long.’

His wife Sally said: ‘We have been amazed at the response. People have been coming up to me in the Co-op with names. One lady was quite disgusted and said ‘you can’t just call it dog’.’

Geoff and Sally Brookes have a lot to consider and are taking their task seriously.

The Banner hopes to be able to reveal the blue puppy’s name before long.
