D-Day looms for Corrie
Published:  12 April, 2008

D-day is fast approaching for the future of Corrie Primary School.

A decision about the proposed closure of the school is due to take place on Tuesday April 22 at 2pm at a meeting of North Ayrshire Council’s Education Executive.

Final say

Further discussion to ratify any decision by the Education Executive will take place on Wednesday April 30 at a meeting of the full council.

If a decision is made to close the school, which has a pupil roll of around 15, the matter will go to Scottish Ministers for a final say.

When the council proposed closing the school last year a campaign against the move was immediately mounted by villagers, islanders and politicians of all colours.

Following a public meeting in Corrie and Sannox Hall the matter went out to consultation, the period of which was extended to allow full and frank comments to be sent in to the council.

A council review committee proposed closing the school and amalgamating it with Brodick Primary School, but parents and other villagers say they fear the death of Corrie if their school closes and that Brodick is beyond the five-mile cut-off point for transporting children to school.

Housing planned

New low-cost housing is planned for the village and it is hoped that families moving in will help to swell the school roll.

If the school were to close it is feared families will not move to the village and Corrie will become like Lochranza, a village of holiday cottages with no shop or school.

The future of Corrie Nursery at the school has yet to be decided.
