Former youth hostel for sale at offers over £320,000
Published:  04 April, 2008

A former youth hostel on Arran is being put on the market at offers over £320,000.

The Scottish Youth Hostel executive committee decided late last year to sell the old Whiting Bay Youth hostel, on the outskirts of the village.

It has been closed for nearly eight years and is being sold in two lots.

Lot one is the main youth hostel building, a detached garage and garden grounds. Offers of more than £225,000 are being sought.

Lot two is a separate building with its own garden and is being sold for offers over £95,000.

The empty building was sometimes used to accommodate large groups from the Arran Outdoor Centre but has not had a warden on site since it closed.

Eleanor Lockhart was the warden at the hostel between 1988 and 1996. She said: ‘It is sad that it is being sold on. When I was there it was a successful business with around 6,000 visitors a year. It was always a popular place for people to stay.’
