It was an April Fool’s trick with a twist — according to prankster Bill Morris of Whiting Bay.
On Tuesday, residents of Whiting Bay woke to see a sign outside their village hall proclaiming it was for sale.
The sign was positioned at the end of the drive and all it said was ‘For Sale, Whiting Bay Hall, Phone W. Morris and Sons, 0141 141441.’
‘I was quite amazed by people’s reaction,’ said Mr Morris, ‘and that was exactly what I wanted.’
Although initially planned as an April Fool trick, the real reason behind the prank was to get the local population more interested in the village hall.
Mr Morris explained: ‘I wanted to get a reaction from people. I wanted to see how they would react when they believed their hall was up for sale. Too many people in the village take the hall for granted.
‘The older generations are very involved in the running of the village hall but we need some young people to hand over to in the future.’
Mr Morris said shop customers throughout the day were apparently shocked to see the sign and many were outraged that it was to be sold.
‘If they knew anything about the hall,’ he added, ‘they would know that it is owned by the people of the village and therefore it couldn’t be sold without consulting the community.’
