An Arran man came within a whisker of buying an 18th century oil painting of Holy Isle on the auction website ebay on Sunday.
The forthcoming auction of this painting was featured in last week’s Banner and Sandy Mutch of Brodick said: ‘I came within 20 seconds of getting it. I saw it in the Banner last Saturday and I thought, God, I’m going to buy that.
‘The view of Holy Isle appears to have been painted from somewhere near to St Brides on Shore Road, Lamlash where my daughter Fiona lives.
‘I’m not into this computer stuff but my son Alastair who lives in Nottingham is a dab hand. He got on to the ebay website and did the bidding for me while I spoke to him on the phone.’
‘He put in a blocking bid of £400 for me on Sunday morning and there were no other bids all day until 5pm. Then someone started the bidding at £210 and it crept up until my bid of £400 was winning with 50 seconds to go.
‘Someone else came in with £420 with 20 seconds to go and I told Alastair to bid £450 but between him entering it and confirming it the auction time was up.
‘It was just bad luck I was hoping that the painting would come to Arran. I’m gutted.’
The seller, Gordon Williams of Bristol, told the Banner: ‘The painting sold for £420. I have just posted it off to the buyer in Glasgow. I am pleased that the information was of interest to your readers.’
