Cash boost for pontoon project
Published:  28 February, 2008

Lochranza could be getting a new pontoon system after financial assistance of £80,000 was given to North Ayrshire Council (NAC).

The award was approved by HIE Argyll and the Islands and goes towards an overall cost of £150,000 for a marine tourism infrastructure development project.

Lochranza and Catacol Sea Society Community Interest Company (CIC), registered last May, has been looking into the feasibility of a pontoon development in the bay. Plans were given the go-ahead in early November and in December 2007 NAC applied to the Scottish ministers to carry out pontoon works at three locations in Lochranza bay.

Norman Swain of Lochranza, chairman of the CIC, said: ‘Hopefully we’ll get a pontoon before long.’

An NAC spokesman said: ‘The money is for a marine pontoon for yachts to moor so that people can come ashore and use local facilities.’

A CIC is a new type of limited company designed specifically for those wishing to operate for the benefit of the community.
