Young people on Arran have expressed anger and deep disappointment at the news that the island’s youth centre at Lamlash is not to be replaced.
The centre, a portable cabin at the rear of the old high school, is to be demolished as it is structurally unsafe.
Now a Scottish Youth Parliament representative Scott McMurray has taken up the cudgels on behalf of centre users.
Scott, a fifth-former at Arran High School, for Arran, wrote to the Banner this week saying the centre users had been wrongly led to believe it would be replaced.
He has written to North Ayrshire councillors to express his dismay.
As a result a meeting is due to be held on Wednesday, March 5 with North Ayrshire council’s head of service for education, Jan Ward, to try to find a new home for the centre. Lamlash Community Centre, now closed, has been ruled out and the focus is on the Arranton, which has room to house all the equipment at the centre.
Councillor Margie Currie and MSP Ken Gibson denounced the decision not to replace the youth centre and their stance was reinforced by Isle of Arran Community Council at its meeting on Tuesday night.
