The 2008 One Act Drama Festival got underway on Wednesday night at the new venue of Arran High School community theatre.
There are 11 plays entered this year, with three on each of the first three nights and two on Saturday night. It is a challenging experience for all concerned, from the actors to the stage and lighting crew and the front of house volunteers. The new surroundings are a leap into the 21st century for the thespians after struggling with the homely comforts of Lamlash Community Centre for so many years.
As usual, each of the 11 teams have had a one hour practice run-through in the theatre with the stage and lighting people. This has given them a chance to experience the grandeur of Lamlash’s newest community facility.
Tonight (Friday) Lamlash Junior Drama Club perform Under Jekyll’s Hyde, a comedy by Tim Kelly, Shiskine Junior Drama perform Ragtime Mystery Quixote, a comedy with a cast of seven and many extras, and Pirnmill Players give Watching the Magpies, an emotional and heart-warming melodrama by Les Clarke.
On Saturday, Shiskine Junior Drama will perform Albert, a comedy about a Finnish au pair and her problems with the English suitor of the previous au pair, and Arran Torch Players will give Rise and Shine, an unusual comedy set in a graveyard, by Elda Cadogan.
