New man on the beat

Arran has a new policeman — PC Alex Ulivi, who takes over from PC Scott Weir.

Originally from Ayr, PC Ulivi has worked in Saltcoats for the last eight and a half years and said he wanted a change.

‘It will be a fresh challenge and a taste of island life,’ he said.

PC Ulivi is 33 and is married with two children aged six weeks and two years. He is no stranger to Arran, having done cover duty for local officers on leave for at least one week in each of the last six years.

His counts photography, mountain biking and ‘fair weather’ hillwalking among his interests.

‘I have seen the high quality of entries in the Banner photo competition and will definitely be submitting some myself,’ he said.

Speaking about the main differences between mainland and island policing, he said: ‘On the mainland you have specialist departments but here you are the main police force across the board and have to deal with everything. It should be good experience.’

PC Ulivi and his family will live in Brodick.

PC Weir leaves Arran after seven years to take up a post in Saltcoats.
