Fear is rising among older residents on Arran about groups of young people hanging around at night and vandalism, it has been claimed.
Police are reassuring them that complaints will be actively followed up and are asking shopkeepers not to sell aerosol spray paint to youngsters.
The police message follows a spate of vandalism in Lamlash and Brodick.
In Lamlash on Sunday, numerous recycling bins in Gordon’s car park and the telephone kiosk by the post office were daubed with spray paint.
Last week The Banner also reported four cases of graffiti being sprayed at various locations in Brodick.
Police sergeant Stevie Leary confirmed there had been a number of incidents of vandalism.
Carol Mitchell of Lamlash Improvements Committee said: ‘Some of the elderly residents in Hamilton Terrace are frightened by these groups of youths. They hang around by the bus shelter next to the Clearance monument.
‘One lady told me she will cross the street to avoid them.
‘It does not create a good impression for tourists. The local police sergeant has been to the Lamlash Rural meeting and reassured residents that reports of incidents will be followed up.’
At the last meeting of Arran Community Council, Lamlash councillor Brenda Stewart reported that groups of young people were loitering in the middle of the village and were causing fear among older residents.
North Ayrshire Council workers were busy cleaning up the paint and graffiti in Lamlash on Tuesday.
