School parking restrictions now in force
Published:  08 February, 2008

Senior Arran High School staff are acting as crossing supervisors until better parking facilities for school buses are available.

North Ayrshire Council said it was making every effort to find a temporary crossing attendant for pupils boarding southbound buses in the evening from the school in Lamlash.

This week temporary yellow ‘no parking’ lines were due to be painted in parts of Lamlash. As the Banner went to press they were still not down, but police sergeant Bob MacKay said the restrictions would be enforced from Thursday — even if the lines were still not there.

The parking restrictions will apply for a five-month period. New school parking is to be created on the site of the old school which is due to be demolished soon.

Sergeant MacKay said: ‘Parking restriction orders have been pinned on lamp posts and will be enforced.

‘As soon as it is dry enough the council will be painting the lines in. I have told my officers to use discretion if someone is unloading, but tickets will be issued.’

The restrictions apply between 3.15pm and 4.15pm from Monday to Friday and particularly affect Park Terrace from its junction with the main road for 206 metres.

New school travel arrangements are that six buses will park on the main road opposite the police station on the northbound carriageway in the morning. Buses from the northend will turn near the Paterson Arran factory before parking facing north. Arrivals will be staggered to prevent traffic congestion.

In the afternoon the two southbound buses will stop at the police station bus stop and pupils will cross the road with the help of a traffic warden. The other four buses and minibus will go up Park Terrace and turn in the school grounds.

An NAC spokesman said: ‘Children boarding the southbound buses in the evening will cross the road and arrangements are in hand to provide a crossing attendant. We are making every effort to find a traffic attendant for this temporary post and until we fill it, senior staff from Arran High will supervise the crossing arrangements.’
