Body washed up on beach
Published:  18 January, 2008

A body found washed up on the beach at Blackwaterfoot has been identified as that of missing 70-year-old Campbeltown man Len Bennett.

Sergeant Bob MacKay, of Arran police, said Mr Bennett’s body was discovered last Saturday at 12.33pm at the South Feorline shore by a member of the public walking a dog.

A casualty surgeon attended the scene and Mr Bennett’s body was then removed to Arran War Memorial Hospital in Lamlash.

A full report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Mr Bennett was reported missing last Friday evening after he left in his Range Rover to cross the Doirlinn causeway between his home on Davaar Island and Campbeltown in terrible weather conditions.

He was on his way to the mainland to collect weekend visitors to the island’s holiday cottages.

His disappearance led to a massive search involving Campbeltown coastguards, Southend lifeboat, Oban Mountain Rescue Team, search dogs, fire crews and police divers as well as the Rescue 177 naval helicopter from HMS Gannet.

His widow, Rose, and daughter Anne-Marie and family said they had been overwhelmed by the dedication of the searchers and the kindness shown to them by the people of Campbeltown and south Kintyre.

Mr Bennett was born on the Wirral, in Cheshire, and became a graphic designer.
