Neil Johnson from Lamlash and his band Parka saw their guitar anthem ‘Disco Dancer’ smash into the UK Indie Chart at number three on Sunday — one place higher than the Arctic Monkeys.
The single has been played on a nightly basis by Zane Lowe on his BBC Radio One show, whilst XFM Radio made ‘Disco Dancer’ their single of the week.
Parka were also stunned to be awarded the coveted number one spot in the prestigious ‘2008 - Ten faces to watch’ poll of the hottest new Scottish writers, actors, bands and filmmakers.
The 27-year-old drummer, who went to Lamlash Primary School and Arran High School, was unavailable to comment on the band’s success.
Speaking to the Banner at the end of December about the band’s rise to success Neil said: ‘It’s great to be known as a Scottish band. This is after all where we are all from. It’s fantastic to be out and about now promoting our music and enjoying being back on tour.’
With the band, Neil has toured with some well-known bands including The Enemy, Foals and Boy Kill Boy.
Their Glasgow gig at King Tut’s last Friday was a complete sell-out so they played a special free show at the Urban Outfitters store the next day to meet demand from fans who were unable to get tickets for the previous evening.
