‘No-parking’ yellow lines are coming to Arran as part of the solution to the temporary parking problem for Arran High School buses.
Demolition of the old school will start in the next few weeks and continue until May. During that time school buses will not be able to park at the front of the old building.
At a meeting in the new school last Friday alternative arrangements were decided which included the painting of yellow lines to prevent parking on the Aldersyde corner.
The meeting involved North Ayrshire Council, Strathclyde police, Stagecoach buses, Barr Construction and the NAC Public Private Partnership. Councillor Margie Currie said she was not invited to the meeting and community councillor Brenda Stewart’s request to attend was declined.
Local police sergeant Bob MacKay said: ‘I believe there are going to be yellow lines from Gordon’s shop and around the corner by the bunkhouse.
‘There will be no parking for one hour between 3pm and 4pm. If there are any vehicles parked there we will ticket them then get them uplifted. Offenders will get a fixed penalty fine.’
In the morning six buses will park on the road outside the school for all pupils to be dropped off. In the afternoon the two southbound buses will stop at the police station bus stop and the other four buses and one minibus will go up Park Terrace and turn in the school grounds.
This is when the yellow line parking restrictions will come into effect.
An NAC spokesman said: ‘All pupils will be dropped outside the school in the morning and make their way into the ground by a lane isolated from the road. Children boarding the southbound buses in the evening will cross the road and arrangements are in hand to provide a crossing attendant. The arrangement is temporary and will end in May.’
Councillor Currie said she had been told by PPP team leader Dr Jim Tulips that traffic measures would be taken where Park Terrace meets the main road at Gordon’s shop.
Sergeant MacKay added: ‘The morning buses have a staggered arrival, so it shouldn’t cause a problem in front of the old school. All buses will be facing north on the northbound carriageway.
‘We have got to put this into perspective. It’s only temporary and I’m happy with it.’
