Wind turbine bid for Holy Isle
Published:  18 January, 2008

A plan is in the pipeline for a 38-metre high wind turbine on Holy Isle.

The location is a site of open grassland at the north of the island, 250 metres from the main retreat. It was chosen to maximise the potential generation and benefit of the wind turbine.

Adam Rose, of Holy Isle Management Team, said they were interested in generating electricity from wind energy in order to use less from the national grid.

The team already has a solar thermal system installed within the buildings. The turbine’s dimensions will be 38 metres in height, with the tower being 32m and the rotor diameter 11m.

It is estimated the operational life of the turbine will be 20-25 years.

Adam said: ‘We are aware of the high landscape and natural heritage value of the area (we note in the local plan map that Holy Isle is considered a sensitive landscape area) but feel that the installation of a turbine of this size would not adversely impact upon the existing quality of the area.’

Adam said at this stage no specific ecological concerns had been raised.

The plan has been sent to Arran Natural History Society. A spokeswoman for the society said they had received the proposal and were considering it.
