Margaret (Meg) Williams celebrated her 100th birthday last Friday with family and friends at High Kildonan.
She received 59 birthday cards from well-wishers but perhaps the most special one was hand-delivered from the Queen that afternoon by deputy lord lieutenant of Ayrshire and Arran, Alastair Grassie.
As he presented her with the card she picked up her pocket knife to open it. She said: ‘This knife was given to me by my son Garth when he was on a scout trip to Peebles many years ago and it has been a great help to me throughout life.’
Mr Grassie told her: ‘You couldn’t be in a nicer place with your family around you.’
Meg was born Margaret Weir in 1908 in Crossford, Lanarkshire with four brothers and a sister.
She came to Arran five years ago to join her son Garth and daughter-in-law Tina who have converted part of their home at Ballymeanochglen Barn for her.
Meg said: ‘I’m clear of the head, have never smoked and I’m not much of a drinker.
‘I like fun and good humour. I can’t boast about having good legs anymore, but they get me there.’
Her grandchildren Adele and David also helped to make it a special day for Meg.
