Drink drive road check to be repeated
Published:  11 January, 2008

Arran drivers should continue to be on their best behaviour and maintain a responsible approach towards drink driving.

That was the New Year message from police sergeant Bob MacKay. On Tuesday he told the Banner: ‘I am encouraged by the more responsible attitude of the Arran public. Although a few drink drivers were apprehended over the Christmas and New Year period the majority of people are heeding our warnings.’

He confirmed that three Arran drivers provided positive breath tests over the festive period but many more were found to be within the legal limits. On Friday, December 14, local police set up a road block on Market Road, Brodick, and stopped every driver disembarking from the 6pm ferry.

Sgt MacKay said that no one provided a positive breath test on that occasion but that they would be repeating the exercise without notice.

He said: ‘Everybody knows that folk tend to take a drink on the last ferry on Friday. It is only a minority but we are aware of certain individuals who are taking a chance and will be clamping down on them.’
