The festival itself will be celebrating its 79th year, though it actually began in 1923. Apart from the war years it has been held every year and the number of classes has increased manifold.

In the first few years there were 17 different classes. Now they are reaching the 100 mark and cover solo, duet and choral singing, piano, strings, woodwind and brass, piping, verse and prose and Scottish country dancing.
