The end of 2007 and the beginning of 2008 is definitely a time of out with the old and in with the new at Lamlash with a ‘final fling’ at the community centre.
Last Saturday night saw the final community event to take place at Lamlash Community Centre, when people from home and away attended a family ceilidh with the Boguillie Band whose energetic Terry Stevens called the dance moves and showed the steps.
Many people took the chance to say a nostalgic farewell to the centre, now more than 90 years old, where events of all kinds have taken place.
But 2008 is bringing a new community school nearby. The school opens on Monday and includes a new community facility with a theatre, and without grant aid or money from North Ayrshire Council the village can no longer afford to run the old one.
Alan Little, caretaker centre since 1981, was determined to make a night of it at the ceilidh, proudly turning up in full Highland dress out of respect for this final occasion.
‘I’m moving over to the new school next week and this will be the last event in the community centre,’ he said.
