Aiming for the big time
Published:  27 December, 2007

Local boy Neil Johnson from Lamlash is set to hit the big-time with his band Parka.

The band have signed to Jeepster Recordings, the label that launched both Snow Patrol and Belle & Sebastian, and are all set to release their second single, Disco Dancer, on January 7.

The 27-year-old drummer, who went to Lamlash Primary School and Arran High School, said he is proud of his Scottish roots.

Neil said: ‘It’s great to be known as a Scottish band. This is after all where we are all from.’

The last few months have been a whirlwind for Parka who, after taking part in their first nationwide tour, saw their debut single shoot to number 11 in the Indie charts.

‘It’s all good,’ said Neil. ‘After spending seven months in the studio recording our album it’s fantastic to be out and about now promoting our music and enjoying being back on tour.’

The band spent the summer recording their debut album at Miloco Studios in London. So far Parka have had the opportunity to record with big name bands like Republica and Gnarls Barkley and they were heralded as the hottest new band by Q magazine.

Parka has toured with the likes of Switches, Foals, Boy Kill Boy and The Young Knives and has been featured in the Hot New Ones in MTV2s NME chart.

Neil said: ‘We’re looking forward to coming back up to Scotland to play some gigs. On January 11 we’re playing at King Tut’s in Glasgow. It’s really exciting.’ For more information go to www.myspace.com/parkamusic
