A group will be starting 2008 with high hopes of achieving a particular status for the island early in the year.
The Fairtrade steering group is asking businesses and the community for help in order to obtain Fairtrade island status.
It wants to know which places are selling such goods to strengthen its case to reach this landmark in time for a fortnight promoting the products (February 25-March 9).
Steering group member Graham Tinto is asking schools, cafes, shops and any other places selling at least two Fairtrade products to contact him.
The aim is to produce as comprehensive a directory as possible of where islanders and visitors can obtain the products.
Graham said: ‘The Fairtrade Foundation has a system of awarding this status to towns and communities and we feel islanders should know what we are doing.
‘Fair Isle, Shetland and Iona all have Fairtrade island status and although we are aware of some places which sell the products we don’t know them all and we need to outline where they can be obtained on the island,’ he told the Banner.
Graham can be contacted at rgtinto@hotmail.com or his address, Oakbank, Lamlash, KA27 8LH.
