Woman dies in road horror
Published:  21 December, 2007

AN ELDERLY Arran woman died on Monday after being struck by a car on a Brodick pavement.

Ann Cooper, aged 77, from Brodick, was hit by a Honda FRV that mounted the kerb and struck a lamppost after hitting a Vauxhall Astra.

Mrs Cooper was pronounced dead at the scene.

An 81-year-old man, also a pedestrian, was taken to Lamlash Memorial Hospital and treated for injuries including a broken arm.

The Honda’s 77-year-old driver suffered minor injuries and was also treated in hospital.

In a statement released on Monday night, Strathclyde police said: ‘At 11.35 this morning a Honda FRV was travelling southbound on the A841 when it was involved in a minor collision with a Vauxhall Astra.

‘The Honda appeared to lose control and mounted the kerb where it struck two pedestrians and crashed into a lamp post.

‘Emergency services were contacted, however the 77-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.’

As the Banner went to press on Wednesday both men were still in hospital. Police did not name them.

Police said a full report would be submitted to the procurator fiscal.

The A841 was closed for seven hours at the scene to allow a police accident investigation team to carry out its work.

Eight traffic police officers arrived by ferry and by police helicopter at around 2pm.

Traffic was diverted along The Ross Road and pupils from Brodick Primary School were escorted along Fisherman’s Walk to get home. Buses for the north end of the island were diverted south.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the accident and are asked to contact Sergeant Ian Pittams at the road policing department in Ayr on 01292 664124.
