Castle revisits a Victorian Christmas
Published:  14 December, 2007

Brodick Castle was transported back 150 years on Sunday to a traditional Victorian Christmas.

At the castle there was great excitement as families joined the castle’s Victorian inhabitants to celebrate this special time of year.

Outside in the gardens Colin Totty was roasting chestnuts to warm up the visitors in the cold winter air.

The inside of the building was decked with greenery and the trees were trimmed with traditional decorations.

Castle staff were dressed as their Victorian counterparts for the day and they could be seen throughout the castle welcoming the visitors and enjoying the festive cheer.

In the bedroom, Lord Henry’s maiden aunt, Euphemia, was causing havoc among the servants having taken to her bed with the vapours.

Her poor maid, Annie Toogood was run off her feet.

Next door in the boudoir Lady Merkland’s sisters, Venetia and Eustacia, were decorating baubles and making greetings’ cards.

In the drawing room, the music mistress, Miss Bechstein, was coaching the houseguests in the songs they intend to perform at the grand Christmas Eve ball.

Down in the kitchen visiting children were helping Mrs Potts the cook to stir up puddings and prepare mince pies.

After wandering through the castle, in the tearoom there were complementary glasses of mulled wine and mince pies to really get everyone in the mood for Christmas.
