Irish copter finds refuge in Brodick
Published:  14 December, 2007

Poor visibility forced a helicopter to land on the grass at Brodick beach on Thursday afternoon.

Pilot Paul McGill, from County Antrim, in Northern Ireland, said they had been forced to land because of the low lying mist.

He said: ‘We are on our way to Greenock to look at an important construction site but the weather is not great and visibility is getting worse and worse.

‘I decided to duck down here.

‘We’ll have a look around, have some lunch and then try to get away after that.’

He is employed as the helicopter pilot for Irish-based construction company Larsen.

His three passengers are all engineers for the business and he often flies company members all over Britain.

On Wednesday morning The Banner received a telephone call from Mr McGill asking if there were any helipads on Arran.

He explained: ‘Whenever you fly it’s good to know where you can land in an emergency or if you need to refuel.

‘I thought I’d give the island’s newspaper a ring because they were bound to know.’

He said he would love to come back to Arran in the summer to see the island at it’s best.
