Award for Brodick youngster
Published:  14 December, 2007

Lewis Coyne from Brodick was awarded the young naturalist of the year award at Brodick Castle Ranger Centre on Saturday.

Along with runners up Kirsty Kerr and Tom Griffiths, Lewis had to show good naturalist skills throughout the year and a keen interest in outdoors and nature.

Senior ranger Kate Sampson said: ‘The Young Gnat Club meet once a month and we have on average 12 kids, between the ages of 6 and 11. Every year we award the cup to the best young naturalist of that year. It’s always hard making the decision as a lot of the members are keen to get out there and learn more.’

Apart from learning more about specific topics, for example this year they had Terry Southall doing bird ringing and an archaeologist teaching them how to excavate an archaeological site, they also do some practical conservation.

This year it included a beach clean up and rhododendron cutting.
