Two Arran High School cross country runners came within metres of bringing home gold in the Ayrshire Cross Country Championships.
Twenty-nine schools from across the county took part in the competition held at the Magnum Centre, Irvine on October 31.
Nicky Emsley and Cameron Paul finished second and third in the senior and third year races respectively.
Nicky’s second place matched his best performance in the championship. Nicky, who was first local in last year’s Ormidale 10K, finished just one metre behind the race winner.
Third year pupil Cameron was third in his race, repeating last year’s performance.
Last year Cameron was first going into the home straight but was overtaken by two runners.
This year, lying in second place on the home straight, Cameron was overtaken again and dropped to third.
Nicky and Cameron, who both compete with Arran Runners, were just two of a 50-strong squad from Arran who took part in first, second, third year and senior races.
P.E teacher Steve Evans said: ‘We saw lots of good performances from the Arran team and there are a few youngsters who are showing great potential.’
