Beating the drum to the tune of £220
Published:  17 November, 2007

Drummers in the Arran Pipe Band have been given a cheque for £220 from another drummer whose playing style is markedly different to their own.

Arran man Jamie McPhail Wilson, who plays in the Glasgow-based Scottish tribal pipe and drum group, Clanadonia, presented the cheque to Derek Shand, Arran Pipe Band’s base drummer.

The money was generated from a motorcycle-based Cultural Show held on Arran last year, organised by Jamie.

Jamie said: ‘Derek helped on the business side of the Cultural Show and we want to encourage Arran Pipe Band, especially the drumming section.’

Derek said the money would be used to help young drummers in the band and ensure they had the correct equipment. He added: ‘We have seven young drummers in the band but we are always wanting to encourage more youngsters.

‘We are really pleased to get this money and we look forward to one day playing with Clanadonia.’

Clanadonia will play at Glasgow Green on Saturday for Scotland’s Euro 2008 qualifying decider against Italy before performing at St Andrew’s Day gig in Singapore.
