Last week the walls of Brodick Castle were hung with some of Arran’s finest contemporary art when 79 local artists including Julie Gurr, Lady Jean Fforde, Sheila Hawkins and Marion Gentleman exhibited their work in the 10th winter exhibition at the castle.
Paintings and sculptures were displayed throughout the building.
Sue Tozer from Brodick Castle said: ‘The castle provides a fantastic backdrop for the island’s artists to show what they can do. We have to admit that it’s not the most ‘exhibition friendly’ space and there have been times over the years that we have despaired of ever getting it open on time. It is only with the help of many of the artists, for which we are so grateful, that we get it looking the way it does.’
This year the amateur entries were restricted to one piece per artist due to the increase in numbers. The exhibition proves that Arran has a large number of very talented amateur, as well as professional, artists.
Sue said: ‘As with every exhibition you will find pieces that will surprise you, probably by people you never knew picked up a paint brush.’
