For the nuclear family
Published:  17 November, 2007

It has been a long time since properties on Arran were put on the market for £25,000 but Arran Estate Agents has done just that – with a nuclear bunker.

The former Royal Observer Corps (ROC) nuclear bunker near Kildonan is on the market this week for offers over £25,000.

The property’s access is through a raised entrance hatch and a ladder leads six metres down to a living/bedroom area and a toilet. There is no mains electricity or running water but a 12-volt DC power supply can be harnessed using a car battery. There is an area of 501 square metres at ground level but development opportunities are restricted.

‘This is a property for someone with a quirky sense of humour,’ said estate agent Bob Brass.

‘I have been a chartered surveyor for nearly 40 years but I have never seen anything like this on the market before.

‘It has been put on sale because the current owner is no longer coming to Kildonan for weekends away.’

Viewings

Mr Brass held two separate viewings at the property on Monday and has had more throughout the week.

He invited Largie Beg man Archie Nicol, a former ROC volunteer, to inform viewers of the history of the bunker.

The bunker was built by the ROC in the 1950s and volunteers, would plot the co-ordinates of potential nuclear explosions from inside the bunker and report back to headquarters in Prestwick.

Archie, who has a long service medal from the ROC, obviously never had to report such an incident but said he and the other three volunteers often took part in drills.

While the property is unique, there are two other unused nuclear bunkers on the island that have been sealed shut. One is at Drumadoon and the other is in Corriegills.

After the ROC was disbanded in 1991, nuclear bunkers around the country closed but the bunker at Kildonan came under private ownership.
