Arran artists benefit from successful Bill Lees workshop
Published:  09 November, 2007

Arran has many artists, living and working and few are better known than Bill Lees.

Ten fortunate people joined him in another successful Arran Visual Arts workshop to learn how to paint with acrylics.

Bill was one of the best people to teach as he is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art, has taught for many years, latterly as the Head of Expressive Arts at Kelvinside Academy, and has exhibited widely, with one man shows in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Arran.

His preferred theme is landscape, particularly the West of Scotland and he has an exhibition each May in Corrie Hall.

Bill Lees introduced his students to the importance of tonal values, contrast and above all, ‘Get the paint on the paper’.

His demonstration was very clear so that it was not so hard to overcome inhibitions and put brush to paper.

Any signs of someone being in difficulty and Bill was there, encouraging, demonstrating and suggesting so that after a few hours his pupils had all produced a picture based on their chosen landscape photograph.

Each person had their own style of interpretation so that a wide range of pictures were presented to Bill for a very encouraging and positive criticism session.

In between all this hard work, Bill gave many interesting facts on the use of acrylics so that his students went away full of knowledge and have no excuse for not finishing pictures.
