New youth centre for Arran
Published:  01 November, 2007

A new youth centre for Arran was discussed at a meeting this week in an attempt to get youngsters off the streets.

An initial meeting of representatives of the communities on Arran was held on Monday and after discussion the group agreed to try and obtain charity status for ‘Arran Foundations’.

This would allow Arran Foundations to set up a trust to seek funding from various organisations that are interested in supporting financially youth projects.

A spokesman for the group said: ‘Arran Youth Connect which is under the auspices of Arran Churches Together, have been running a youth café in Brodick Church Hall on Saturday evenings.

‘They were in discussion with Colleen McAlistair who is a youth worker in Canada with the foundations organisation.

‘Colleen’s vision was that a permanent youth centre for the young people of Arran could be set up that would be open every day.

‘We have already received donations and these will be used towards achieving this charity status.’

A steering group will be set up for this venture which will include the police, local council, a banker, Arran Youth Connect and other interested parties.

The first meeting of the steering group will take place on Wednesday, December 5.
