An Arran man is refusing to pay his road tax until the island’s roads are brought up to standard.
James Webb from Brodick said the roads on Arran have been in a poor condition for a long time and that his road tax payment is not being put to proper use.
Mr Webb said: ‘Enough is enough for me with regards to my road tax duty. It will cost me £180 for my renewal at the end of this month and I won’t be paying this time round.
‘Arran’s roads have been sub-standard or worse for many years and I have had enough with the greed in the system.’
Mr Webb is hoping that by refusing to pay his road tax the issue of Arran’s roads will be looked into more closely.
In the past the council and the government have been criticised for spending only five percent of their budget on Arran’s roads.
In June this year the A841 from Lochranza to Whiting Bay down Arran’s west coast was reclassified as a C class road. He said: ‘I think Arran and the UK should get a road tax break for, say, five years or more because of all the previous terms. If they only spend five percent then we will only pay five percent.’
Rising fuel prices have also angered Mr Webb: ‘80p out of every £1 goes to the government and it is just simply more proof of the greed in the system.
‘The government, he said, ‘has taken all my money that I could of paid into a pension and towards a healthy saving plan for a mortgage etc. No more!’
