Ferry fares three times cheaper 20 years ago
Published:  19 October, 2007

In the same week that the yearly ferry fare increase was announced by Caledonian MacBrayne, The Banner stumbled across an interesting advert from 20 years ago.

Between November 21, 1987, and January 16, 1988, a day return ticket on the Brodick- Ardrossan route would cost the passenger only £17.

This was a Christmas and New Year special aimed at Christmas shoppers and it was a very reasonable deal.

Valid on the 8.20am sailing and returning on the 6pm ferry the price included family car, driver and one passenger.

Once on board passengers were also treated to a cup of coffee or tea and a biscuit.

Each additional adult only cost £3. Over the past 20 years the price of ferry tickets have increased almost three and half times.

To go away for one day with your car this winter will cost around £59.

A five-day return ticket costs £7.25 per passenger and a five day return for the car is £44.50.
