Sad loss for the island as Breadalbane Hotel closes
Published:  19 October, 2007

Next Thursday the entire contents of the Breadalbane Hotel, Kildonan will be sold at auction as the hotel finally closes its doors after almost a century.

Due to the closure of the hotel, the contents of the 40-cover restaurant, outside decked area, kitchen, bedrooms, and flat as well as the pool table, patio heater and oil tank are up for sale.

The auction is taking place at the hotel and all items sold must be removed from the premises by 1pm the next day.

Sold at Easter to Derek Callaghan, an Ayrshire hotelier, publican and entrepreneur, the future of the hotel has been much discussed over recent months.

Property developers had been interested in the Breadalbane’s outstanding location and the potential offered by the land.

Janet Lacey from Dippen owned and ran the hotel with her husband between 1987 and 1989.

She said: ‘I think it is a terrible shame that it has closed. We thoroughly enjoyed running it and I have beautiful memories of our time there.

‘I am very concerned that it could be knocked down. It would be such a loss for the village and the island.’

In the 1900s the Breadalbane boarding house was popular with visitors and after the Second World War it became the Breadalbane Hotel.

In a year that has seen a number of other premises close their doors, including the Lagg Hotel public bar and the Pantry in Whiting Bay, the closure of the Breadalbane is a sad loss to the island.

A spokesman from North Ayrshire Council said: ‘A building warrant would be needed to demolish any building and so far we have received no application from the owners of the Breadalbane Hotel.’
