Mourners will no longer have to take their lives into their hands by walking along the busy main Brodick to Lamlash road when attending funerals.
Previously there was no pavement between Corriegills and the new Brodick Cemetery, but now North Ayrshire Council has spent £40,000 to provide one.
Brodick Improvements Committee has been campaigning for the pavement for three years.
Richard Wright, assistant island officer for NAC, said: ‘This is an area that is particularly dangerous with some of the fastest traffic on the island.
‘Also with funerals people’s minds are elsewhere. It became critical that safe access was available to the cemetery.’
Mr Wright said: ‘The funding came out of the capital budget. That’s partly the reason for the delay. With these things you have a wish list, as time moves on the items you are waiting for get nearer becoming a possibility. It so happened this year the funds were available.’
Harry Davidson, secretary of Brodick Improvements Committee, said: ‘NAC are to be congratulated on this.’
He added: ‘Previously people parked their cars at Corriegills road end and had to walk along the main road to get to the cemetery. This was very dangerous.
‘We have been asking the council for a pavement for three years and now they have done it. They managed to get the funding.
‘It’s certainly an important road safety consideration.’
The council still has the final surface to complete on the pavement.
