Tony falls 3,500ft for charity
Published:  12 October, 2007

Tony Curtis from Whiting Bay raised £600 for charity last weekend by jumping out of a plane at 3,500 feet.

Tony travelled down to the Northwest Parachute Centre in the Lake District last Sunday.

He had never done a parachute jump before.

He said: ‘It was absolutely brilliant. I did a solo flight so I was completely alone. It’s an amazing feeling just falling with nothing but the sound of the wind in the parachute to disturb you.’

The money that he raised will go towards a new minibus for the Children’s Opportunity Group (COG) in Bolton.

The charity caters for children and teenagers by offering outreach services for them in the community. The charity was set up in 1979, by Nicola McGuinness, whose daughter has Down’s Syndrome and works to get support in mainstream schools for children with such learning needs.

Tony said: ‘I was absolutely terrified. There were two voices in my head. One said, ‘You can’t jump out of a plane,’ but the other was telling me to go for it and not let my sponsors down.’

A once in a lifetime experience, Tony said he was lucky to do it on a clear sunny day: ‘I could see across the whole of the Lake District from Ullswater and over to Morcambe Bay. It was one of the best things I have ever done.

Could all those who sponsored Tony please get their money to him as soon as possible.
